If you suffer from headaches that sometimes stretch to the jaw area, pain in chewing or stiffness of the jaw than you may have a problem with your Temporomandibular Joint.
The Temporomandibular Joint is the hinge on which the lower jaw pivots as it opens and closes. Unfortunately the joint can be prone to problems. Problems with the Temporomandibular Joint are varied and can manifest themselves as headaches, neck ache, earache, a clicking when opening and closing the mouth, lock jaw and difficulties in swallowing or talking.
The causes are sometimes hard to pinpoint but disorders of the TMJ have been traced back to teeth grinding, an incorrect bite, stress, tension and nail biting. Some people may be more prone to the condition and some people who suffer with TMJ problems will find that on or both of their parents also suffer.
Although problems with the joint are common and varied, it is only classed as a disorder if the patient suffers pain from the joint. A TMJ Dentist will be able to discuss treatment options with you once TMJ Diagnosis has been performed. Treatment is wide and varied and involves first addressing the actual cause of the problem. Bites are corrected, teeth grinding during the night is combated using a mouth guard and so on. Once the root cause of the disorder is addressed then sometimes the condition can correct itself. Any people that still suffer from pain can be assessed by their doctor to see if any correctional surgery is needed.

From burger patties to peanut butter, Salmonella lurks in the most unexpected food purchases that you give to your child. Fast food burgers, raw eggs, and even supermarket vegetables often contain Salmonella traces especially when they aren’t properly prepared.
Salmonella, a type of bacteria that causes serious fever once swallowed, is mainly found in raw meats and animal feces. Uncooked food and unhygienic processing of packaged food products usually contain strains of these harmful bacteria that can lead to death once it enters the body.
Food poisoning from salmonella is called Salmonellosis. Most victims of this food poisoning are children who have weak immune systems. Salmonellosis often occurs during summer and claims thousands of victims yearly in the US alone. Its symptoms include fever, diarrhea, and stomach pains. Once the symptoms occur, victims are in danger of dehydration and for this they should see medical help immediately.
Here are some guidelines to prevent food poisoning from salmonella:
- Wash hands before and every meal. It’s ideal to clean them thoroughly after preparing meals especially when you’ve just cut or handled chicken, pork, or beef.
- Make sure you cook your food thoroughly whether it’s red meat or eggs. The same thing goes for vegetables. Before cooking your veggies, rinse them on running water to remove excess dirt even if they’re pre-packed by your trusted grocery store.
- Don’t just cook your food in a microwave. Only use the microwave for heating meals.
- If a recipe calls for a raw egg parts (e.g. Eggs Benedict, Meringue), use egg white or egg yolk substitutes available in supermarkets. When using milk and eggs, use pasteurized or decontaminated ones to reduce the risk of salmonella infection.
Disinfect your kitchen regularly with cleaners that get rid of different bacteria that multiply on tiles and sinks.
Think safety during winter

Winter has now officially turned cold. Even though we have had 2 mild winters previous to this, it seems Jack Frost has returned with a vengeance. We have however had little snow so far, so we haven’t gotten to enjoy the fun part of the cold, sledging.
Now the children have returned to school it is important that we pay particular attention to both their health and their safety.
Winter is a time that is notorious for bringing coughs, colds and the flu. There is no better breeding ground for germs than a school. If one child falls ill then it is only a matter of time before the whole school follows. You can help your child to help prevent the spread of germs by telling them to make sure that they wash their hands after using the toilet and before eating.
Safety is also an issue at this time of year. School playgrounds will be icy and present many more hazards than during the summer months. Also, the mornings are dark and frosty. There is less visibility for car drivers with the sun low in the sky and a vehicles stopping distance may be increased with ice on the road. Children must be extra vigilant when crossing roads.
It shouldn’t be long before the mornings are lighter and warmer, until then a little extra care should be taken.
