winterWinter has now officially turned cold. Even though we have had 2 mild winters previous to this, it seems Jack Frost has returned with a vengeance. We have however had little snow so far, so we haven’t gotten to enjoy the fun part of the cold, sledging.

Now the children have returned to school it is important that we pay particular attention to both their health and their safety.

Winter is a time that is notorious for bringing coughs, colds and the flu. There is no better breeding ground for germs than a school. If one child falls ill then it is only a matter of time before the whole school follows. You can help your child to help prevent the spread of germs by telling them to make sure that they wash their hands after using the toilet and before eating.

Safety is also an issue at this time of year. School playgrounds will be icy and present many more hazards than during the summer months. Also, the mornings are dark and frosty. There is less visibility for car drivers with the sun low in the sky and a vehicles stopping distance may be increased with ice on the road. Children must be extra vigilant when crossing roads.

It shouldn’t be long before the mornings are lighter and warmer, until then a little extra care should be taken.
